Every year, the same question arrives with admissions season: ₹40,000 on a laptop, or ₹25,000 on a tablet with a keyboard case and a stylus?
The marketing has made this genuinely confusing. Tablets are advertised with keyboard attachments and productivity software, positioned as laptop replacements at laptop-adjacent prices. Sometimes that's accurate. Often it isn't, and the discovery happens in week three of a semester, which is the worst possible time.
The honest answer depends on one thing: what the coursework actually demands. Everything else is secondary.
Choose a laptop if any of these are true
Your course involves software that only runs on a desktop operating system. Programming environments, engineering and CAD packages, statistics tools, serious video or audio editing, simulation software. Tablet versions of these are either absent or so reduced that they can't complete coursework. This single factor decides the question for engineering, computer science, architecture, design and most science students, and no amount of tablet enthusiasm changes it.
You write long documents regularly. Reports, dissertations, assignments running to thousands of words. A real keyboard, a proper file system and genuine multi-window multitasking are not luxuries here — they're the difference between working and fighting the machine. Tablet multitasking has improved a great deal and still isn't the same thing.
Your college requires specific software for exams, submissions or lab work. Check this before deciding, not after. Institutional software is frequently desktop-only and rarely negotiable.
You want one device for four years. Laptops are more repairable, more upgradable in some cases, and more likely to still be doing the job in year four.
Choose a tablet if this is your reality
Your work is mostly reading, annotating and handwritten notes. For medicine, law, humanities and any subject built on reading large volumes of PDFs, a tablet with a stylus is genuinely superior to a laptop. Annotating directly on a document, writing equations and diagrams by hand, organising notes visually — these are things a laptop does poorly and a tablet does beautifully.
Your subject is diagram-heavy. Mathematics, physics, chemistry, anything where you work through problems by hand. Typing equations is miserable; writing them with a stylus is natural.
You carry it all day and weight and battery life matter more than raw capability.
You already have access to a shared computer or a desktop at home for the occasional heavy task. This is the situation where a tablet makes the most sense of all — it handles the daily 90%, and the desktop covers the rest.
The budget reality nobody mentions
The comparison people run is tablet price against laptop price. The comparison that matters is tablet plus keyboard case plus stylus against laptop price.
Those accessories aren't optional if the tablet is replacing a laptop, and together they frequently add a substantial amount — often enough to close most of the gap with an entry-level laptop. Run the full-kit number before deciding, because that's where the "cheaper option" quietly stops being cheaper.
Two further costs specific to tablets: storage isn't usually expandable, and the higher-storage variants carry a significant premium; and some productivity software requires a subscription on tablets where the desktop version doesn't.
What to insist on, either way
If it's a laptop
- 16GB RAM if you can stretch to it. 8GB is the floor and ages quickly, and most modern thin laptops have soldered memory that can't be upgraded later. This is the specification that determines how long the machine stays pleasant.
- SSD storage only. A mechanical drive is the single biggest cause of a laptop feeling slow.
- A screen you can look at for six hours. Full HD minimum, IPS panel, and reasonable brightness. A dim, low-resolution screen is the most common regret in student laptops.
- Weight, if you're carrying it daily. The difference between 1.4kg and 2.1kg in a bag with textbooks is felt every single day.
If it's a tablet
- Stylus support that genuinely works with your specific model — not just "supports a stylus", but low latency and pressure sensitivity, which vary enormously between price tiers.
- Enough storage for offline lectures and PDFs, since expansion usually isn't an option.
- A keyboard case that's actually usable for typing, not a cover with keys printed on it. Try one if you possibly can.
- Software support timeline, for the same reason as phones — it determines the useful life.
The hybrid answer, which is often the right one
For a lot of students the genuinely optimal setup isn't either device at full price — it's a modest laptop plus a cheap tablet, or a laptop plus a phone that's good enough for reading.
A ₹35,000 laptop and a ₹12,000 basic tablet covers both use cases better than a single ₹47,000 device covers either. The laptop does the coursework; the tablet does the reading and the notes. This gets overlooked because the question is usually framed as a binary, and it's worth explicitly considering before spending everything on one machine.
The questions worth asking before you spend anything
Three questions settle this faster than any specification comparison, and they're worth asking before the shopping starts.
What did students a year ahead of you actually buy, and what do they regret? This is the single most valuable input available and it costs one conversation. Course requirements are specific and often unwritten — the seniors know which software the department insists on, which lab machines are unusable, and whether the "recommended specification" on the college website was updated this decade.
Does the department provide anything? Some courses provide lab access, software licences or even hardware. Buying a machine to run software the college already licenses on its own systems is a common and expensive assumption.
What will this device do outside coursework? Be honest. If it's also the entertainment device, the gaming machine and the thing used at home during holidays, that changes the answer — usually toward a laptop, and usually toward a slightly better screen and speakers than coursework alone would justify.
Where the money actually goes wrong
Two patterns account for most student purchasing regret, and they're opposites.
Overbuying for imagined needs. A machine with a discrete graphics card and a top-tier processor, bought because the course "might" involve heavy work someday, used almost entirely for documents and browsing. That's several thousand rupees spent on capability, weight, heat and reduced battery life that never earns its keep.
Underbuying on the wrong axis. Saving ₹4,000 by taking 8GB of RAM instead of 16GB on a machine with soldered memory, then living with a laptop that struggles by year two and can't be upgraded. Or saving on the screen — the component you stare at for thousands of hours — to afford a processor tier you'll never notice.
The pattern underneath both: spending on specifications that are easy to compare, rather than on the ones that determine daily experience. RAM, storage type and screen quality are boring and they decide almost everything.
Buy the previous generation, in both categories
The same rule applies here as everywhere in electronics, and student budgets make it especially valuable: last year's model, after a refresh, is typically 15–30% cheaper for a difference you will not notice in coursework.
Check two things — remaining software support, and whether it's still officially stocked rather than leftover inventory from an unknown seller. If both are fine, the discount is free money and it's the single easiest way to move up a tier in build quality or screen.
Timing and comparison
Around admissions season there are usually student-focused offers, and many brands run education pricing that requires verifying student status — worth checking directly on the manufacturer's own store, because those prices frequently beat the marketplaces and almost nobody looks.
The festive window in September–October remains the deepest discount period. December clearance is good for outgoing models.
Whichever you choose, the comparison discipline is the same and it matters more here than in most categories: match the exact configuration. One laptop model name covers six variants at six prices, differing in processor, RAM and storage. One tablet model covers several storage and connectivity variants. Comparing an 8GB/256GB listing against a 16GB/512GB one is how people conclude they've found a bargain and end up with half the machine.

A padded sleeve costs a few hundred rupees and prevents the most common form of damage — pressure and impact inside a crowded bag. For tablets, a case with a raised screen lip matters more than an expensive keyboard cover. And accidental damage protection, which is usually poor value on a home appliance, is one of the few situations where it's genuinely worth considering: a student laptop is dropped, spilled on, and carried through rain at rates a desk machine never experiences.
Read what it actually covers before buying it, though. Some plans exclude liquid damage, which is the single most common student accident, and a plan that excludes the likely failure is just a fee.
The one-line answer
If your coursework needs desktop software or long-form writing, buy a laptop. If it's built on reading, annotating and handwritten notes, buy a tablet with a good stylus. If it's genuinely both, price the hybrid before assuming you need one expensive device — and in every case, compare the full kit, not the headline.
